YTAA 2018 Awards Ceremony in Venice

The YTAA 2018 Awards Ceremony will take place on September 20 at Palazzo Michiel, in the frame of La Biennale di Venezia 2018.
Two panel discussions will take place before the Awards Ceremony:

The first panel will be about Heritage and architectural education and it will be based on the experiences of the YTAA Winners:
One of the trends within the European architectural context is the increasing relevance of heritage. Many European regions have a large old building stock which makes possible new construction in rare cases, being refurbishment the type of task which takes the biggest percentage. Here lies a great challenge of comfort, universal accessibility, energy use and resource efficiency that might require new expertise for students. Graduates require to be prepared to assume a fitting, competent, responsible and effective role within the sector of heritage and this is made visible with this year’s 4 YTAA Winners:

“Neue Bau|akademie Berlin – a club for the former & future architecture” – Schinkel’s 1836 building was partially destroyed during WW2 and torn down afterwards. The debate today is on its reconstruction. Hendrik Brinkmann – College of Architecture, Media and Design Berlin, University of the Arts.

“Perdido (Lost) – P.R.U.S. of Madrid” – the recovery of Madrid’s forgotten underground water infrastructures which are connected to the city’s origin. Julio Gotor Valcárcel – Madrid School of Architecture, Polytechnic University of Madrid

“Deplorable Framework” – the British countryside natural heritage is reinvented and as human intervention becomes legible, impressions of nature are emancipated from naive conceptions of beauty. Matthew Gregorowski – The Cass Faculty of Art Architecture & Design, London Metropolitan University;

“The Bank of England: a dialectical project” – Critically inspired by John Soane’s legendary ‘ruin-esque’ Bank of England, the project explicitly engages the architectural dialectics of ruin and construction. Loed Stolte – Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology.

The second panel will be called Heritage, reconstruction and reuse and it will bring together the experiences of some of the participants of the Future Architecture Platform:   The 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage is bringing up essential topics related to Europe’s heritage and how we should tackle with it. Cultural heritage comes in many shapes and forms: tangible, intangible, natural and digital. Architecture and urbanism shape or environment and different approaches (reconstruction, reuse, demolition) are brought forward to create the correct diagnosis for each situation. Through the partnership with the Future Architecture Platform www.futurearchitectureplatform.org  3 participants whose research projects are connected to heritage from different approaches will participate in this debate moderated by a fourth participant, Babau Bureau from Venice. The three other participants will be: Miruna Dunu (Coastland), Tania Tovar Torres (In Articulo Mortis) and Michael Kraus (Political Church).

The Awards Ceremony will take place at 16:00 with the participation of the jury members, the winners and finalists, university representatives, sponsor representatives and institutional representatives from the European Commission, La Biennale di Venezia, ACE-CAE, EAAE and the European Cultural Centre in Venice. Afterwards there will be a cocktail at Palazzo Mora to celebrate European Young Talent.
