The Tower of Dreams and Nostalgia

TOWER OF DREAMS AND YEARNING
Luxemburg Tower at the State Garden Show in Trier
A tower is something defining, a sign or symbol, an elevation in the landscape that enables us to see friend or foe more clearly.
So it would be very difficult to use a tower to document allegiance and proximity to a neighbour.
The “Luxemburg Tower” at the State Garden Show in Trier is actually a path that opens up harmoniously and yet closely linked to the earth, in archaic design language, from a backfilled landmark in the area.
The design is based on the idea of demonstrating the allegiance between two neighbouring towns whilst carrying forth the eye and the thoughts.

To this end, a linear path that is constantly changing direction rises up, inviting us to rest and then move in the various directions. The visible axes bear the names of Europe’s main towns and cities.
Each name resonates with a specific context and its own story, giving the visitor the most diverse auras and perceptions as he ascends the path.
On the top platform, the visitor enters into a half-open room. In the enclosed sides, the material defines a precise, selected picture “cut-out” towards the city of Luxembourg.
Thus a direct connection between Trier and Luxembourg is created at the end of the path.
Our thoughts float beyond the horizon, drifting off into the distance, making this place in Trier a place of dreams and of yearning.
