Villa O
Villa O is a vacation-time residence situated at the tip of a cape in the Finnish archipelago. The design of the villa progressed in stages. In the first stage an old log sauna was renovated at the same time as the erection of a boat shed guest cabin. Then the main building, with a floor area of 160 sqm, was built.
In villa O the old traditions and contemporary architecture come together. Using both traditional materials and prefabricated element technology, the holiday home conceals within it the latest in house technology and accessories. The heating is based on terrestrial heating. The rain water from the roof is collected to a reservoir and used for irrigation of the garden.
The compact building has different types of spaces, where one can spend time during the different seasons or at times of the day. The terraces cut into the main volume of the building blur the border between inside and outside. One can enjoy breakfast in the atrium both on hot summer mornings and when the autumn winds blow. There are views from each room, via covered outdoor spaces, in different directions to the surrounding nature and the sea.
The materials of the villa reflect of the surrounding nature. Its two Žstone coresŽ are differentiated in the facades as rendered segments. The finger jointed facade boarding is untreated aspen which turns a silver grey. The thick greying plank flooring of the terrace is larch. The plinth is clad with schist. The pitch-black open kitchen is linked to the stone core. Inside the ceiling is in aspen and the floor lye-bleached spruce. The sturdy waxed wood window frames and the downplayed materials and the furniture of the interior emphasize the role of the landscape in the space.
The meandering building blends into the surrounding nature.
The clients good taste and uncompromising attitude, as well as the professional skill of the builders, guaranteed the high level of the implementation.
