TUPPER HOME is a system – of which a first 30 m² prototype has been constructed in Madrid - for comfortable and affordable housing that proposes an alternative to official urban planning by presenting architectural and financial responses to public concerns about residential development in the EU. Through the use of specialised technological solutions and the normalisation of their production processes, space usage is optimised. With a 55% reduction in the size of the dwellings the same services can be maintained, but with a 55% saving in the overall cost. Moreover, the system is promoted by word of mouth with users exchanging information and results. In this way, a community of homeowners is created composed of individuals who have been empowered by the experience of participating in the design and construction of their own homes and who might be encouraged to apply their new-found confidence and knowledge to issues dealing with the public realm.
