Studio Furillen
Furillen is a small peninsula in the Baltic Sea, just east of Gotland, formerly used for military activities and the limestone industry. Studio Furillen tries to both preserve the strong feeling and character to be found on Furillen and at the same time create something new to be both closed and open, simple and yet complex.
Minimal material and an industrial facade structure create simplicity and sustainability. The facade is cladded with sheets of Corten steel and the roof of grass. The various hydraulic and mechanical terraces that can be raised or lowered allow the building to completely change character.
The building can alternate between openness and seclusion, with dividing sliding doors, movable backdrops, semi-transparent curtain widths and the immense glass surfaces that can become fully impenetrable by means of the adjustable facade panels. The atrium of the building offers a height-adjustable platform with a slatted zinc floor that filters the light into paler shafts. At its highest position the platform forms a roof-terrace, while the middle or bottom position provides an enclosed patio.
The studio aims to offer a feeling of seclusion, while also providing scope for meetings and creative activities. The flexible solution involving movable elements enables a rich variation in light conditions and views. Total seclusion is also possible and daylight then comes in via skylights and the atrium. The atrium offers a choice of three levels, and this also affects the character of the interior.
Inside the building are both large open spaces and smaller areas that can function independently of one another. This allows the studio to be used for different purposes at the same time. There are studio and gallery spaces, areas for photography and film recording, a library, writing places, a kitchen, separate kitchenettes, a spa and four bedrooms. Size: approximately 500 m2
