Market of Neighbours
The main idea of the concept was to create an uptodate market, which preserves the scale and the athmosphere of the old demolished market. The old market stood nearby the new marketbuilding. After demolishing it we created there a multifunctional square. The building itself is an open hall with natural ventillation and illumination.
The new market is in the center of 22. district of Budapest. The programme was to make a new market for all the shops which were to be found in the old demolished market. In the neighborhood there are important public buildings of the district like the City Hall, post, little shopping center, a church and a cinema theater, which is out of use. The new position of the market, the multifunctional square in front of it, creates a new urban situation. The square starts to live and organizes the life around it. The surrounding buildings are in suburb scale. Our aim was to keep it. Brickfassade has tradition here. We also used a white brick on our building.
One of the most important requirement of the project was to keep the low construction costs. At the same time to build up a sustainable building in 9 months. The idea was to keep the existing market as long as the new market will be ready. To remain in the frame of the budget, during the planning we checked several times the costs and if it was needed we changed technical solutions. We had to face a complex technical problem package like parking, traffic and water-energy supply.
The market building is basically "closed market" with gates surrounded by a brick wall coverd with a steel roof structure. The brick is a cheap product from the neighborhood. The roof consists of different high roof elements in the shape of a chess table. The geometry of the roof ensures the natural ventillation and illumination of the space under it. The steel structure is naked and visible. The roof has a perforated steel trapeze sheet skin on the fassades. The retails are prefabricated steel constructions like pavilions. Reatails, offices, public toilets etc. which need heating and cooling received an air- water heatpump system.
