The Steam-powered Brewery in Lobeč near Mšeno Rescue and Revival
The Steam-powered Brewery is a witness of the five-hundred-years old tradition of beer brewing in the Kokořín region. The first reference dates back to 1586, with a Renaissance core, rebuilt at the end of 19th century. The production was suspended in 1943, turning into the ruin afterwards. Since 2007 the premises are possessed and rescued by RIOFRIO architectural studio.
The main property n. 34: A steam-engine and boiler room, a brewing hall, a vertical air kiln and a malt loft are used for a cultural events, exhibition, tourist accommodation and gastronomy. A back-yard part works as a small brewery.
The property n. 95: A brewer-house function as a family house and an architecture office.
In 2015 was the project awarded the Patrimonium pro Futuro prize.
Location: bottom valley position in the centre of Lobeč - a small Kokořín village.
Task: rescue and revival of forsaken and devastated former brewery premises with a historical value and establishing new Kokořín tourist attraction (with a guided tour, a small brewery, a gastronomy, an accommodation, housing).
Structure and Technology: the premises purged of devaluing building interventions and presented as a cultural value. With an accent of a traditional lime-base building process, of carpenter structure with traditional joints, of ironworker structure, etc. Properly done searches and analyses and an archive-dates study enabled a late 19th century look of the premises again.
