Restoration and Renovation of the Metropol Theatre

The Metropol Theater is an original work by Josep Maria Jujol Gibert conceived as "a ship that led the spectators towards the sea of salvation". Limited by a space that did not give him architectural freedom, Jujol concentrated on the decorative details that revolve around the idea of the ship. The theatre has been renovated.

During the Spanish war (1936-1939), a bomb fell on the glazed gallery that overlooks the inner courtyard of the theatre and it was rebuilt differently. Years later, it underwent some modifications when the Metropol theater became a cinema. The modifications entailed opening an entrance on Rambla Nova. At the end of the 80s, the Metropol was closed, due to poor security conditions. In 1991 it was acquired by the Tarragona City Council and a process of careful rehabilitation began, directed by the architect Josep Llinàs. According to himself, "a new theater has been built respecting the original magic that Jujol knew how to imprint on the structure, but adapting it to the current times, in which people demand comforts".
