Roshen Plaza

Roshen Plaza is a project for transformation a part of the territory of a confectionery factory into a public space with integration into the urban context and introduction of new functions for citizens and guests of the city.

Work on the project is focused on three main directions:

Roshen Headquarter and its infrastructure;

Public spaces and facilities: entertainment and educational center, company store, ice-rink, fountain;

Territory: creation of a public park recreational area and its integration into context, pedestrian connections, parking lots and the courtyard of the main office.

The area suffers from: lack of high-quality pedestrian zones, congestion of transport highways and poorly equipped pedestrian paths, the lack of recreation places.

Increased air and sound pollution, lack of landscaping and dry microclimate especially cause discomfort in the summer time.

Surrounded by major highways, the territory of the factory represents a hidden potential for the citizens and the corporation itself. The meeting point for manufacturer and consumer.

Strategy:

Territory:

maximum openness, greening and aeration, inclusiveness of space. Developing of recreation areas. Opening access to buildings of the 19th century, symbolically returns objects to the city.

Buildings:

clearing the area of chaotic technological development, exposing the historical core. Rethinking functional zoning and adapting to new features. Facades reconstruction.

Result:

Territory:

City pedestrian zone has been reconstructed, including the system of underground pedestrian crossings. The territory of the factory has turned into a square with landscaping, a multimedia fountain, and aeration systems.

A unique egg-shape icerink has been created, with skate rental and areas for spectators.

In winter, the area becomes a Christmas village, a Christmas tree is set up in the center of the ice rink, and the rest of the area is filled with street food stalls. Guests are provided with free parking, toilets, guarded territory.

In summer – the territory of the ice rink became a playground for skateboarders and cyclists, a square along Nauki avenue provide fountains and evening show with 3D projections on the facade of the factory buildings.

Building.

The main buildings located on site were built in the second half of the 19th century. Construction materials: brick, cast iron. Partially reconstructed and rebuilt using concrete, after the World War II.

In a building renovation project, the main strategy is cleaning and non-interference in original. The old brick was cleaned of paint on both inside and outside. The main finishing materials inside were used: old bricks, concrete panels, painting of concrete structures. New objects (staircase blocks) were erected with a small offset from the body of the building, made of metal. The lightness of the structures is dictated by the proximity of groundwater.

Territory.

During the operation of the factory, the site was actively built up with engineering and storage facilities, technological sites. Planting of greenery was practically absent.

When developing the site design, the main focus was on new plants and trees, creating a neutral background for it. Pavement and landscape elements are mainly made of granite. The structure of a supporting concrete wall along the border of the site is faced with bricks.
