Paula Rêgo s House of Stories

The House of Stories is a museum dedicated to Portuguese artist Paula Rêgo, whose work deals with folk tales and storytelling. The forested site was chosen by the architect and the building was positioned so as to preserve as many trees as possible. In response to the plurality of the programme, a set of volumes with different heights was developed. The twin chimney-like forms at the entrance axis contain skylights at the top and cover the bookshop and café.

An auditorium is located at the other side of the entrance hall. The part of the plan corresponding to the exhibition spaces and offices consists of a series of rectangles composed about the large temporary gallery in the centre, with all the spaces having a view to the garden outside. The entire building is finished with wood-shuttered concrete that has been tinted a terracotta colour in reference to the traditional architecture of the area.
